Between their popularity with consumers around the world and heavy backing from the UK government, heat pumps are set to become a familiar fixture in our homes and businesses as we embrace more sustainable lifestyles.
Heat pumps are contemporary innovations so it’s no surprise customers often have numerous questions. One of the most common, is about whether heat pumps work with existing radiators. Another, is often about whether a heat pump requires underfloor heating instead of a radiator.
From using existing radiators with heat pumps to underfloor heating and how to upgrade your radiators for energy efficiency, here’s all you need to know about using heat pumps with radiators.
Can heat pumps be used with radiators?
When you have a new heat pump installed, you can keep your old radiators. However the question of whether existing radiators are ok to use with heat pumps has an added layer of consideration.
Why?
Because when we talk about renewable, low carbon heating, which is what the installation of a heat pump is for, we’re considering more than just heat. Renewable energy must be more energy efficient than what we had before, otherwise the switch to low carbon heating is pointless.
Why?
Because the more heat we use, the more energy we require, the more toxic carbon emissions we cause to be released into the atmosphere. Therefore the answer to th question of whether you can use existing radiators with a heat pump is yes.
However, the question of whether you should use an existing radiator with a heat pump if you want to run the heat pump at its most efficient and ensure your reduction of carbon emissions is as low as can be, is more complex.
Energy Efficient, Low Carbon Heating
Low carbon heating is designed to operate efficiently. That means the heat generated by a heat pump is carefully regulated and constructed to remain at a consistent temperature for longer periods.
When compared to the heat emitted by a traditional, fossil fuel boiler, a heat pump avoids the dangerously high highs of 60-65°C a traditional radiator can reach. Instead, a heat pump will hold your heat at an energy efficient, sustainable rate of 40 - 45°C. These measures will provide you with a consistent temperature which can be maintained long term, preventing
the sharp rise and sudden drop in heat delivered by traditional heating.
The added bonus to more efficient energy use is of course, lower energy bills.
So back to the original question of using existing radiators with a new heat pump, or indeed, using radiators at all.
Upgrading radiators
So yes you can keep your old radiators and use them with your new heat pump. However, for optimum energy efficiency, you will want to both review how well insulated your property is and whether you want/ need to upgrade to larger radiators now or in the future to improve the energy efficiency of your heating.
You see, your existing radiators may still work efficiently with your heat pump. That’s why our highly experienced engineers will discuss your needs plus the specifications of your property and existing radiators with you.
Insulation
Here in the UK, our upkeep of building insulation has dropped over the last decade. With so many beautiful period properties in use, the UK’s insulation rates perform poorly against those in other countries.
As we move quickly towards Net Zero 2050 and our attitudes to our degree of consumption across the board sobers ever-more rapidly, we will all be paying a lot more attention to the quality of insulation in the buildings we inhabit.
Larger radiators
Larger radiators disperse heat better across a space and those of us who live in older properties all have our gripes about the positioning of our radiators so like all good upgrades, there are many advantages to gain from investing in improved technology.
Underfloor heating
Similarly, underfloor heating will also better spread heat around a room and the sleek aesthetic gained from the absence of radiators holds lots of appeal for our insatiable desire for minimal styling. However, underfloor heating is more frequently used on ground floors because it is more complex to install at a higher level. Therefore, you may even wish to use
a tailored combination of radiators and underfloor heating.
